WOJR—House of Horns

Studies WOJR’s “House of Horns,” a unique private residence outside of San Francisco.

WOJR is an organization of designers based in Cambridge, MA who are committed to the idea of architecture as a form of cultural production, engaging the intersections of art, architecture, and urbanism. The House of Horns, a private residence located in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains outside San Francisco, is the first major realized work of WOJR and represents the synthesis of core themes and ideas from the firm’s first decade of collaboration.

WOJR—House of Horns documents the built home in the form of a photographic narrative examining the central thesis of the house as a spatial and temporal instrument. Created in collaboration with architectural photographer Nick Dearden, this montage explores the house’s spaces with their characteristic horn-like forms, as they bring to life the changing light, shadow, and surrounding hillside meadow over the course of a day from dawn to dusk. In addition, a text by WOJR further reflects on the project, their process, and the discipline of architecture as a whole. Drawings, plans, sections, and elevations, as well as detailed information on the building, round off the beautiful, large-format volume.
