America Reframed: Political History for What Comes Next

America Reframed publishes ambitious and novel historical interpretations of American power, politics, and democracy for both popular and academic audiences. Books in this series advance sweeping new accounts of political institutions, political economy, identity, citizenship, and democratic norms by drawing upon African American history; ethnic studies; women’s, gender, and sexuality studies; and the transnational turn in US history, among other vibrant fields. By recasting core understandings of American political institutions and practices—often incorporating the perspectives of people who have been overlooked in previous discussions of these topics—these books articulate the importance of poverty, racism, sexism, and colonialism as enduring threats to the promise of democracy. They raise structural questions about justice, inequality, markets, democracy, and rights. America Reframed also makes such vital scholarly research more accessible to diverse readers—students, journalists, policymakers, and the general public—while cutting through partisan chatter, hot takes, and social media’s dilettantism. The resulting works aim to reframe momentous scholarly debates and public agendas.

America Reframed will host up to two book workshops annually, for series authors. These gatherings will provide valuable targeted feedback and provide the intellectual community imperative to producing outstanding scholarship and enriching the field of political history. Scholars and other experts will offer critiques, helping authors to sharpen their narratives and frame their books for wider audiences. These workshops will particularly support advanced scholars developing second or third projects, as well as outstanding first-time authors. These workshops are currently funded by the Marguerite Casey Foundation.
